Go Thailand: Day 13 – Go Football

After the massage, and a quick trip to a street vendor to buy some things, we decide to chill at Chill Out – the American bar near the Thai Kitchen Cookery Centre from the other night. Hoping for highlights of the NFL playoff games, we are greeted with racing on the flat screen instead. Apparently, the Seahawks & Packers will meet for the NFC Championship Game; and the Colts will meet the Patriots for AFC representation.

We didn’t watch any NFL games while in Thailand. We didn’t watch many bowl games. Last year this time, I was in Los Angeles at an epic tailgate in Pasadena before walking into the arose Bowl for the NCAA National Championship Game between Auburn and Florida State. It was a great game. It was a great time. I was with great friends, including Derek, who is in Thailand with me now. What a difference a year makes.

I never thought I’d say this, but I didn’t mind missing the football games. And I’m a sports nut. I thought perhaps I felt this way cow my NINERS were not in the playoffs for the first time in four years, but in actuality that only covered a small portion of the truth. I was having way too much fun in Thailand. I was having way too much fun living my life (of which none of these athletes that we’re getting paid millions of dollars – some deservedly so – were giving me money to live my life). I was having way too much fun with my friends – Derek and Chris and Annile and Nick et al. I’ll always love my teams. I’ll always love my sports. But I’ll now always opt for real life – my very own life – to provide me with meaning more than people I don’t know will.

My own life, my relationships with my family and my friends, the times I spend with them, the times I spend alone with my dog – those were what was really important to me. Not who won a game.

That was a breakthrough.

That being said… It sure would have been nice if the San Francisco 49ers and the Notre Adams a Fighting Irish showed up to play this year. Maybe the Chicago Cubs will win the World Series this year.

Hard to imagine we have been here for only two weeks. The States seem a lifetime ago. And tomorrow, I will leave for Los Angeles with Derek thinking of staying a few extra days.
