Unconditional Love

What’s wonderful about dogs is that they are truly a (wo)man’s best friend. They don’t ask for much, but in return, give so much more than we could ever fathom. They are an instant smile and an instant laugh. They are the instant happy face that we all want. It doesn’t matter what happens outside my apartment, once I walk through my doors, everything is good. Cos he’s good and all he wants to do is be with me.

Dogs and kiddies are truly the best thing in the world. And I often wish adults could see the world from their perspective, or remember what it was like when they were little. They are not borne of hate, but rather of unconditional love and openness and simplicity. To hate and distrust and complicate are learned through experiences. They are fearless and not self-conscious, up for anything and everything. Their is purity and joy in their hearts, also a not so surprising degree of common sense breaking down what we make complicated, into simple terms. I love everything about dogs and kids. And though I am not a parent, I am a dad.

After an evening walk, Taylor and I have settled in. It is going to be a chilly night (no disrespect to those living in the Midwest and East Coast). Over the next three days, we will be seeing quite a bit of rain; and we are getting ready for a staycation. (I love a rainy night.) I am laying on the couch about to play a movie, pillows and blankets all around me ready to envelope me at a moment’s notice. And Taylor’s spot right next to me on the couch is primed, with a new comforter awaiting him.

And yet Tay wants to snuggle with me, more accurately, on me. Sitting on the floor upright in front of me and resting his head on my stomach, no question he’s showing me that are we destined to be together for the rest of our lives. (I don’t have the heart to tell him otherwise.) He’s showing that he will love me unconditionally that entire time. After a while, he gets back onto the couch, to his designated spot.

He will always be my brother’s dog. He will always be mine. And we will always be each other’s.

      1. That’s actually how I got Taylor. He and his brother Lawrence were both my brother’s dogs; and they would get into these massive fights by the time they were four years old. To keep them in the family, Taylor became my dog. And it’s been amazing (for me) ever since. I totally understand what you’re going through.
