Is This Heaven?

I was going to to leave when at the last minute I decided to stay. I was already in the middle of paradise. Why would I want to leave?

My parents live near a clubhouse, with a dock that leads into a large lake filled with lily pads, various birds, fishes and some gators. On this particular evening as Christmas was winding down, the sun set amidst a brilliant array of pink clouds. I had to run to the dock to watch it go down. I love lily pads and sunsets.

Afterwards, I spied my sister, her hubby and their kids playing at the swing in the playground by the clubhouse, waiting a few moments to witness and appreciate the scene before joining them. I thought of the final moments of the movie “Field of Dreams”.

John Kinsella: Is this heaven?
Ray Kinsella: It’s Iowa.
John Kinsella: Iowa? I could have sworn this was heaven [starts to walk away]
Ray Kinsella: Is there a heaven?
John Kinsella: Oh yeah. It’s the place where dreams come true. [Ray looks around, seeing his wife playing with their daughter on the porch]
Ray Kinsella: Maybe this is heaven.

I had stumbled upon heaven. I love my family even more than lily pads and sunsets. Surprise.

I ambled up to a swing, mere feet from where my sister, brother-in-law, niece and nephew were swinging on the bench.

“Uncle Cecil, you have to pump your feet!!”

Bea was an expert on the swings, and because she liked to share her knowledge and expertise, was more than willing to teach her skills to her uncle who was always learning new things.

And so today on this Christmas Day, I learned how to fly high on a swing.

And stumbled upon heaven, of course.
