Despite losing quite a bit of weight the month away, we ate like kings in India. Admittedly, Indian food is my favourite. Some days (especially in Rajistani), all we had was vegetarian meals, which I always tell my friends if you want to be vegetarian, then Indian food is what you need to be eating. Our days were filled with naan, jeera rice, vegetable or chicken biriyani, vegetable pulao, Channa masala, aloo gobi, chicken curry, dal, curries galore, as well as a host of other delectable dishes. My mouth is watering while I write this.
A buddy on Facebook asked why we lost weight even though we ate like kings. “Food in India is natural ie not “refined” and not “heavy”. It doesn’t sit in your stomach. So breakfast, lunch, dinner gets processed by your body much faster and more efficiently converting into energy you can use, expelling the rest as waste.”
And DaveRisner added, “Buddy, the food is great, but it is inevitable…you WILL get Dehli Belly. Ha…Derek Layne just beat me to this while I write it. The good thing for me is that many Indian Menus also serve Chinese Fried rice and noodle dishes…which was a nice reprieve from Indian curries…those spices didn’t always agree with me. I lost 8-10 pounds.” Turned out the guy who asked the original question was named Buddy.
The flavors are simply spectacularly splendid. Of course, I like to turn up the heat but it doesn’t need to be fiery hot for Indian cuisine to be good. Marrying turmeric, paprika, coriander, chili (cayenne) powder, cardamom, cloves, star anise, cinnamon, fennel seeds, black pepper and Himalayan pink salt is a wedding feast everyone would want to attend.
So that’s what we did.
Every.
Single.
Day.
Coming back to the States, I had a Philly cheesesteak at Jim’s Steaks in (you guessed it) Philadelphia, a Chicago dog at O’Hare, a burger at Umami Burger in San Francisco before waiting a couple weeks to go back to my normal – cooking chicken curry for dinner.
I’m home.
The food in India was brilliant. Absolutely brilliant.
