Living Life — Over the Hills and Far Away

Standing between a Redwood and a fire pit, there was only thing I could do. Enveloping us was the smell of pine, bright and fragrant. Above me, pine needles loomed (not to mention the aforementioned redwoods). Waikiki is the center of paradise.

Many dreams come true and some have silver linings
I live for my dream and a pocketful of gold.

Mellow is the man who knows what he’s been missing
Many many men can’t see the open road.

Many is a word that only leaves you guessing
Guessing ’bout a thing you really ought to know, ooh!
You really ought to know…

— “Over the Hills and Far Away” Led Zeppelin

I peed on a tree. That’s what happens after a night with craft beer from a craft beersman living in Thailand, an old friend of mine since 1985, when “Back to the Future” made 1955 popular again. But it was 2016. Chris & I have been friends since we were fourteen years old. He has always been an adventurer. He’s always looked for the open road; and seen it. And like the Led Zeppelin song above reminisces, has always inspired me to find new meaning in the adventures of life, forever searching for “my pocketful of gold”.

It’s midnight now, and I’m in my tent. The fire’s out; it had been dancing all night. My dog finally sleeps soundly, joining the chorus of snores with the tent next to us. I’m wide awake, thinking the things anyone would in the middle of a forest under the stars with an audience of redwoods below it. Zeppelin plays in all our heads awake or asleep, “Bron-Y_Aur Stomp“, its melody evoking the forest atmosphere around us.

Taylor finally sleeps.
So now I can too.
