Go Thailand: Day 10 – Get Sick, Get Well Quick

It was bound to happen.

On Day 1, Derek got food poisoning. It came on like a hurricane. From our friends’ suggestions, we went to the hospital, was admitted, given a prognosis by the doctor, administered an IV and antibiotics by the nurses and sent home with more meds all for ~$150 and within three hours. By the next day, he was fine as wine.

On Day 10, I got sick with a 24 hour bug.

Derek left by 8:00 AM and went on a day tour to Inthonan National Forest. Unfortunately, it had rained all day. Though he was at Thailand’s tallest peak (over 8,000 feet above sea level), he could not see much. He could not see the pagodas that were promised along the way either. The waterfalls were, however, spectacular. Since I had canceled my trip the morning I was to be picked up, my money was not refunded. Back before 7:00 PM, he left for a two hour massage, came back and called it a night.

I slept through everything.

When it was all said and done, I had slept almost thirty hours straight. And when I finally woke up, I was myself again. (I don’t quite have an explanation for it yet, but both times I was sick on my trips, here in Thailand, and earlier this year in India, rest and fluids and a little bit of over the counter meds was all I needed to feel better within a day or two, while in the States, it always seemed to linger on longer than usual.)

On Day 11, Derek was hit with the same. We both went to Chiang Rai on a tour. By that evening, he recreated my Day 10.

It’s quite amazing that with everything we have done and everything we have eaten, that our health has been as good as it has been. (Finding wood to knock on.) that’s a big win.

Even on days where your intent is to go have an adventure, to go travel, to go live, sometimes it just doesn’t work out that way… that, on some days, you’ll have setbacks. Today was one of those days.

However, we are resilient and one bad day could not deter us from an epic trip so far. “Why do we fall, Bruce? So we can learn to pick ourselves back up.”

Tomorrow predicted better days.
Tomorrow we would pick ourselves back up.

Go Adventure. Go Travel. Go Live
