A Little Something Extra… Revisiting an Afternoon at Point Reyes, CA

I started this oil painting last year the beginning of November, the day before my mother’s birthday in fact, when Taylor and I decided to spend an afternoon on the beach in stunningly beautiful Point Reyes in Northern California to watch the sun set. I remember so much from that afternoon.

I remember the sounds and the colours the most.

I still remember the pinks and purples behind me and the reds, oranges and yellows in front of me amidst a myriad versions of blue in the sky, all looking down a violent yet oddly peaceful ocean, both bright and dark blue, with the waves crashing.

And then Taylor and I sat down on the beach. He was gnawing at his newly acquired none. I painted. As I finished painting it later that evening, I could not figure out why it seemed so incomplete. I would revisit it at times over the subsequent months.

I needed to give it something… A little something extra. I just did not know what.

It took me this long to figure out what it needed was the large, solid yet raggedy, wooden fence to give the piece perspective. It’s now complete!

And I thought to myself…
What is that one extra thing you need to do to get what you need done?
