In our search for Zen, today was a near perfect day.
My best friend and his dog are staying with me. The two of them joined Taylor and I on a two and a half mile hike up and down the Alta Vista Trail in the Marin Headlands, i.e. my backyard. An hour on the trail brought us home. After feeding the kids, we made a smoothie with granola, honey, coconut oil, peanut butter, blueberries, strawberries, bananas, Greek yogurt, and chia seeds.
After finishing our smoothies, we drove to Mill Valley to hit the Tennessee Valley Trail, a 1.8 mile hike to its beach on the Pacific Ocean, where we spent the rest of our morning. We found Zen walking along the beach, sticking our feet into the cool sand and cold waters, as the powerful sounds of the Pacific dominated our senses. We climbed the hill (for me, an arduous climb) to the top sitting by an abandoned gun turret overlooking the ocean.
Hiking back, then returning home to clean up, we drove into town for a tasty grass-fed, organic burger at Napa Valley Burger on Bridgeway in downtown Sausalito, perusing window art inside the galleries along the way to the restaurant. Once back home after a pit stop at Mollie Stone to buy some fresh fish (for the Kerala fish curry I would make at night) and more ingredients for smoothies in the mornings, we took a nap. Waking up, we took the boys out on a short walk and then left for our third hike for the day – Lands End by the Presidio in the city.
We drove to and parked at the Cliff House, a little more than an hour till sunset. We walked about a mile, hugging the coastline, greeted by majestic pelicans, regal trees, the setting sun, and the cool air of the forest in the city. Lands End is beautifully magnificent. We made our way down to the beach to get another closeup of the ocean’s crashing waves, this time from across the Bay from our vantage point earlier in the morning. Making our way back (including a hellacious climb up the steps), we settled with our canvases and paints down in Sutro Baths, and painted what we saw and what we felt as the sun set giving way to some of the most magnificent colours we’d ever seen. It’s easy to paint when the pelicans, the ocean and the sun all work in sync to create Zen for you.
Today was a near perfect day.
I say near perfect because, while the day indeed was simply amazing, the journey for perfection is far from over. Once achieving perfection, we are done; or at the very least, onto the next big thing. And I am far from done.
Go Adventure. Go Travel. Go Live.
