My routine with Taylor used to be a daily hike. That’s been replaced by a walk to the hill at a small forest nearby where he trots excitedly knowing what’s about to happen. We play “fetch”. For anywhere from thirty minutes to an hour, I’ll throw the ball down the hill, and he races after it. He does it over and over and over again, until he’s out of breath. And just like that, we walk back home. On the way today, we happened to walk along the sidewalk at the bottom of the hill where I live, and I happened to notice the shrubs that were always there, but I never really saw. For whatever reason, this time I saw it’s purple flowers. Bending down to pick a nub, I instinctually decided to smell. To my wonderful amazement, it was lavender!! I absolutely love lavender!! That particular area where I’d walk by countless times was filled with lavender shrubs! Today just happened to be the day I noticed!!

And so, as Taylor looked at me panting and dumbfounded, I wrote a poem.

O’lavender
Oh Lavender
How did I not see?

O’lavender
Oh Lavender
Always you were ‘fore me

O’lavender
Oh Lavender
I say to you loudly
While I stand here proudly

O’lavender
Oh Lavender
I used to stop and smell the roses

O’lavender
Oh Lavender
A window opens while a door closes

O’lavender
Oh Lavender
I hold you ‘tween my fingers

O’lavender
Oh Lavender
Oh your sweet scent lingers

O’lavender
Oh Lavender
I see you now

O’lavender
Oh Lavender
I say to you and life… “wow
