A Promise to California

Walt enters my mind quite a bit when I’m on the ferry. He’s got a way with words; and he loves California for many of the same reasons I love California. I don’t know how long I will be here, but I do know for every moment that I am, I will love her. I will love her with all of everything inside of me (and I’d like to think that she’ll love me back).

That’s a promise.

A Promise to California,

Also to the great Pastoral Plains, and for Oregon:

Sojourning east a while longer, soon I travel toward you, to remain,

to teach robust American love;

For I know very well that I and robust love belong among you, inland,

and along the Western Sea;

For These States tend inland, and toward the Western Sea–and I will

also.
