Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door

Taylor laid there resplendent in his bed, his big head taking up space, always proud and defiant but respectful. That was his face—he always looked like he was up to something. He also always looked longingly in adoration of me (and the past year plus, Grace). There was so much love in his eyes, which darted this way and that but his head never moved. It wasn’t meant to. His breathing was halting at best. Yet something about it gave me consolation that the end was far, far away and not what his daily dread believed him to be. That sentiment was months ago, and sadly no longer the case. He snored into the air around him potentially unaware of his surroundings. Perhaps he was. He was both conniving and kind… pushy yet respectful… aggressive yet gentle… a big boy with a big heart. He was everything to me. And the end is getting nearer and nearer.

The old man and I went on a walk
There was not much to say
So we did not talk

Not the man he once was
He’s much much better
But falling to nature’s laws

“It’s getting dark too dark to see
Feels like I’m knockin’ on heaven’s door"

His gait once carried power
With each step now
Closer to the end of his hour

He still has so much love in his
eyes
Longingly looking at us
As his spirits rise

“That cold black cloud is comin’ down
Feels like I’m knockin’ on heaven’s door”

Though he loves her, he bites her fingers
He can’t help it
Cos they taste like chicken wingers

He’s a handful till the end
Cleaning his shit
Always our best friend

He’ll be with us forever more
He’s the best dog
We could’ve ever asked for

"Knock-knock-knockin’ on heaven’s door
Knock-knock-knockin’ on heaven’s door
Knock-knock-knockin’ on heaven’s door”

“Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door”, lyrics by Bob Dylan
