Lovebirds

When I think about love and when I think about the person I’m going to spend the rest of my life with, my soulmate, I think about lovebirds.

In this day and age, admittedly setting aside all judgement (cos things do happen and no one person can know what goes on between two people unless that person is one of the two involved), it seems people have a very different idea of what commitment really means. It really does mean staying together not just through the good times, but also during the bad times. What a novel concept!

Admittedly, I’ve been accused a time or two of having an overly romantic, and in the eyes of some, an almost unrealistic and naive view of love, to which I say, give me romantic, give me unrealistic, especially if that means to strive for something good, something greater than for what most people seem to settle. I’ve always wanted to settle down. I’ve just never wanted to settle.

And those couples in my life that settled down, but chose not to settle? Well, they are beacons in my life, giving me hope that true love indeed is possible. By no means are their relationships perfect. There is no such thing. But they are perfectly committed to each other; and I admire that so much.

We could learn a thing or two from lovebirds.

Most species of lovebirds pair up for life. They often behave similarly to their mate. They sit together. They perch together. They sleep next to each other.

Aside from the perching, all of that sounds like a good idea when I fall in love. Actually, I’m down for perching too.

And so I decided to think about love to sketch and paint lovebirds.
