22 December 2008 could have been one of those mornings. By 7:28 AM, I was crossing the street (admittedly jay-walking) – Damen Avenue in Chicago just mere feet south of the big Damen/Milwaukee/North intersection, a little north of the front of The Double Door and, across from it, the Damen Blue Line stop – when I was hit by a car going 30 mph heading northbound. Luckily I didn’t see the car coming which meant that my body did not tense thereby did not brace itself for the impact. That could have saved my life. As it was, I do remember that exact moment before I slipped into unconsciousness. I’ll never forget it.
My life flashed before me, and a series of Polaroid pictures appeared one after the other of every person that I had ever met that I loved and/or loved me. It was so moving, that I’m sure if I had had the time, I would have been fighting back tears. I asked God for another chance to live, to tell the people that I love, that I loved them, to tell him that I wasn’t done, that I had much more to do, that there was a great destiny in store for me. I would do it. I would do it now. I pleaded with him forever, though the entire flashback of pictures and my exchange with God took but a fraction of a nanosecond.
He must have agreed with me cos I woke back up on the middle of that busy intersection, 45 minutes still there when a fire truck came to put me on a stretcher, to wait for the paramedics who would take me to the hospital.
I’ve been making good on my promise to God ever since, all the while living an extraordinary life in the guise of an ordinary one, achieving some of my wildest dreams.
